Department of Medical Radiograpy

I am delighted to introduce you to our vibrant community here at the Department of Medical Radiography, a pivotal discipline within the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. Since its inception in 2003, our department has been committed to advancing diagnostic excellence by integrating high-quality teaching with clinically relevant research to enhance radiological service delivery in the field of medical imaging and radiation sciences.

Our primary focus is the comprehensive training of undergraduate Radiography students, equipping them with the clinical and technical competencies required for modern healthcare. Over the years, our academic reach has expanded to provide foundational and specialized instruction in Radiation Physics and Radiographic Anatomy for students across the College of Medical Sciences. We provide a competency-based education that ensures our students are not only technically proficient but also ethically grounded and patient-centered in their practice.

The Department is actively involved in academic research and specialized training, contributing to the global body of knowledge in Medical Imaging and Radiation sciences as well as the development of highly skilled professionals capable of meeting the global demand for medical imaging experts. Our faculty members are renowned for their commitment to mentoring the next generation of radiographers, contributing to postgraduate programmes leading to the award of postgraduate certificates and diplomas in Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Radiotherapy and Mammography by the Training Institute of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria.

As part of our commitment to advanced capacity building and specialized manpower development, the Department is continuously evolving its curriculum to include emerging trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical imaging. Beyond curriculum innovation, the Department offers Master’s in Radiation and Environmental Protection, Ultrasonography, Radiography Health Management and Medical Radiography to strengthen research capacity and leadership in the radiologic sciences at both national and international levels.

The Department maintains a strong and sustained partnership with the University Teaching Hospital, which anchors our clinical competency-based training approach. This collaboration ensures seamless integration of academic instruction with real-world clinical practice. Students receive structured exposure to conventional radiography, mammography, specialized contrast studies, and cross-sectional imaging modalities. The integration of academic rigor with active clinical service delivery fosters both intellectual depth and professional competence.
