Centre for Nuclear Energy Research and Training (CNERT)

Historical Background
The Centre for Nuclear Energy Research and Training, CNERT, was established in 2009 as one of the four Centres of National Nuclear Manpower and Infrastructure Development programme. The Centre supports the introduction of nuclear technology for electric power generation and the Road Map for the Acquisition of Nuclear Power by the Federal Government of Nigeria spear-headed by the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC).
The Centre has the following mandate among others:

  • to provide facilities for training of undergraduate and postgraduate students in all aspects of Nuclear Energy matters in general and Nuclear Technology in particular and
  • - to cooperate with relevant academic departments to introduce and implement undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Nuclear Science and Nuclear Engineering.

In its effort to achieving these mandates, CNERT has graduated ten (10) students with a degree in M.Sc. Nuclear Science through the Postgraduate School, University of Maiduguri. In addition, the Centre has completed the processes for the introduction of Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources.
