Who We Are


The Centre for Peace Diplomatic and Development Studies (CPDDS) was established in 2006 as a premier unit of the University of Maiduguri to conduct research and facilitate capacity building, training and advocacy in peace, security, good governance and development. The central objectives of the Centre are to:

  1. foster the society’s ability to understand conflict as a basis for conflict management and resolution
  2. facilitate research on aspects of peace and conflict management, security, good governance and development issues such as poverty, gender and human rights
  3. build capacity and expertise in conflict monitoring, early warning signal detection, prevention, management and resolution as well as peace enforcement and peace building, good governance and development
  4. provide a forum for dialogue, seminars, conferences, workshops, roundtable discussions and lectures on conflict management and peace enforcement. READ MORE

Our Activities


COMMUNITY PEACE & SAFETY PARTNERSHIP (CPSP)

The Centre is the convener of the Community Peace and Safety Partnership (CPSP) in four (4) local governments ( Biu, Hawul, Kwaya Kusar and Bayo) under the Managing Conflict in North Eastern Nigeria (MCN) project funded by the European Union.

MENTAL HEALTH & PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT (MHPSS)

The Centre is engaging with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in developing a curriculum for Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS). The MacArthur Foundation grant is ongoing and would be concluded in early 2020.

PARTNERSHIP WITH NEXTIER SPD

The Centre is partnering with Nextier SPD (Security, Peace and Development) on research and policy formulation geared towards finding solutions to development issues.

AGREEMENT WITH INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has signed an agreement with the Centre to carry out a Rapid Assessment of Knowledge, Practice and Coverage (KPC) survey on health systems strengthening in Borno state.

NIGERIA STABILITY & RECONCILIATION PROJECT (NSRP)

The Centre has carried out components of the five-year Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation Project (NSRP) funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and coordinated by the British Council in Nigeria.

INTERVENTION STRATEGIES ON SECURITY CHALLENGES

The Centre received a grant from the MacArthur Foundation and is currently engaging in various intervention strategies on the security challenges in the Northern states of Nigeria.
