About Department of Biochemistry

This programme is undertaken in the Faculty of Science, University of Maiduguri, under the Course Credit System. The general philosophy is to train and produce highly skilled manpower for sustainable development and nation building. The graduates produced will be of high academic standard with adequate practical background of immediate value for science and medical education and research.

To have well trained academic and technical staff as well as up-to-date equipment and facilities so as to provide an enabling environment for teaching, learning and research and as well as to produce well-trained graduates.

To fit into the overall purpose of the University of Maiduguri through:

  • supporting the basic sciences and medical science courses for programmes available in the Faculty of Science, College of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy. This is in addition to the students of the Department of Biochemistry as well as students from other related programmes including B.Sc. (Hons) Microbiology, B.Sc.(Hons) Nursing Science, B. Pharm., B.Sc. (Hons) Physiotheraphy, B.Sc. (Hons) Radiography, MBBS and BDS,
  • producing undergraduates and postgraduates who will be gainfully engaged in the wider economy,
  • contributing directly to the development of North-Eastern Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa through conferences, workshops, research etc. and
  • collaborating on projects with other governmental, non-governmental agencies, sister universities and other bodies within and outside the country.

In order to satisfy the mission, the Department of Biochemistry intends to provide training and research opportunities for students in the fields and specializations of Biochemistry at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Specifically, the Department intends to:

  • train personnel with excellent ability in handling basic laboratory equipment,
  • advance the knowledge of Biochemistry as a subject through research and publications

Accreditation Status
The Department has full accreditation status.

The Department offers B.Sc, M. Sc and Ph.D. programmes.

Physical Development
Physical structures include: laboratory (03), library (01), instrument room (01), chemical store ( 01) and offices.
