Philosophy
The philosophy behind the Biological Sciences degree programmes is for the sustainable development of resources and nation building through its management. Knowledge in the field of Biological Sciences in general enhances acquisition of skills to overcome challenges of environmental resource management and its development for the betterment of the ever-increasing global human population in a scientific atmosphere.

Vision
To contribute to the development of northeastern Nigeria, the nation and sub Saharan Africa through development and expansion of programmes aimed at training and research.

Mission

  • To produce a steady stream of undergraduates and postgraduates academically and professionally qualified for the development and sustainable use of the natural resources in Nigeria in particular and the world in general;
  • To supporting the science foundation courses which supply most of the intake to the science-based courses of the College of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine together with courses run by the Faculty of Education at the diploma and first degree levels;
  • To collaborate on projects with agencies such as ODA projects on agro forestry on Vertisolic soils (with the Department of Forest Sciences and Technology, UK. Project on Artisanal Fisheries) (CEMAR, University of Portsmouth, UK);
  • To train graduate in finding solutions to environmental problems and challenges through pollution control, conservation strategies, community development and teaching in secondary and primary schools;

Accreditation Status
The Department has partial accreditation.

Nomenclature and Programmes
The Department is named the Department of Biological Sciences with Botany, Environmental Biology, and Zoology units. Programmes offered include the following:

  • B.Sc (Hons) (Botany), M.Sc. and Ph.D. (Plant Morphology and Physiology)
  • B.Sc (Hons)(Zoology), M. Sc. and Ph.D. (Applied Entomology and Parasitology)
  • B.Sc (Hons) (Environmental Biology) M. Sc. and Ph.D. (Arid Zone Ecology)

Physical Development
The units available in the Department include the following: library (01), GIS Library (01), Research Laboratory (01), Small Animal Research Space (01), Botanical Garden (01), Herbarium (01), Insectory Unit (01), Zoological Garden (01), Histology Laboratory (01) and central store for laboratory equipment (01).
