About Civil and Water Resources Engineering

The syllabus for the Civil and Water Resources Engineering degree programme was approved by the Senate of the University of Maiduguri in 1983 along with the syllabi of other Departments in the Faculty. The Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering took off the same year along with the Departments of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Since the Department of Civil and Water Resources Engineering came into existence in 1983/84 Session after the Senate took a decision to that effect, the syllabus has been revised twice, first in 1997 and then in 2002. The curriculum is currently being revised by a seven man Departmental curriculum review committee. The current revised syllabus of the programme became necessary in 2003/2004 session in order to encompass the Computer Engineering programme, approved by Senate at its 188th meeting held on 27th November, 2003.


Disciplines within the Department

The Civil and Water Resources Engineering Degree Programme of the University of Maiduguri was created in the 1983/1984 Academic Session and offers courses covering the following areas:

  1. Structural Engineering
  2. Highways and Transportation Engineering
  3. Water Resources Engineering
  4. Environmental Engineering
  5. Geotechnical Engineering
  6. Construction Technology and Management

The programme has four laboratories (Structural/Concrete materials laboratory, Soil Mechanics/Geotechnical/Highway, Environmental Engineering and Hydraulics Laboratories) and a survey store. The programme currently has twenty two academic staff which include one visiting Professor, one Reader, four Senior Lecturers, two visiting Senior Lecturers, five Lecturers I, six Lecturers II, three Assistant Lecturers, Five graduate assistants and four technical staff. Ten of the academic staff members already hold their Ph.D. degrees, while seven others are currently pursuing their Ph.D. studies in different universities within and outside the Country.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Skilled Engineering Manpower is a principal factor for economic development and prosperity of a nation. The philosophy of the Civil and Water Resources programme therefore is to produce graduates with high academic standard and practical background who will be able to meet the immediate requirements for the development of the catchment area of the University of Maiduguri in particular and the nation in general. In pursuance of the above, the programme is designed with the following features;

  • A number of common courses with other Departments in the Faculty at the initial stages of the programme to provide broad based engineering training.
  • Special skill and in-depth study in a particular area of the programme through electives, workshop practice, laboratory practical, tutorials and individual designed based projects.
  • Adequate knowledge in the area of general studies, management and humanities.
  • Interaction between student and professionals during industrial training.

The main objectives of the programme are;

  • To produce graduates locally by providing training facilities and operating programme which are professional in rigour, highly practical in training relevant to the society.
  • To produce graduates who are sufficiently broad based to understand and tackle common day- to-day engineering problems and at the same time adequately trained to acquire special skills and in-depth knowledge in Civil and water resources engineering.
  • To produce graduates with high academic standard coupled with adequate practical experience and who are to rise to the challenges of a developing economy.
  • To produce graduates with sufficient knowledge in general studies, management and humanities.
