About Education

Philosophy
The Department of Education appreciates its historical antecedent within the University of Maiduguri and the north-east sub-region. It sees education as playing vital roles in the development of the individual and the society within the context of a rapidly changing world, a world that has become a global village. It also sees the teacher as central in these changes. It has designed a degree programme that emphasizes best practice in the inculcation of knowledge, attitude and skills that translate into a holistic development the individual. These would enable him fit well into a rapidly changing world and the effective discharge of his roles as a teacher.

Aims
The aims of the Department are:

  • training of teachers and other educational personnel by means of undergraduate courses,
  • pursuit of new knowledge and understanding through research and the communication and dissemination of these through teaching and publications,
  • broad development of the individual, both students and teachers, to fulfill their potentials within the educational system,
  • exemplifying effective educational practice in the manner in which the department carries out its own teaching, research and community service activities and
  • responding to the changing needs and circumstances of the immediate community in which the University is based and also to the needs and circumstances of the nation and the world as a whole.

Objectives

  • To offer a range of educational programmes at undergraduate level, designed to meet the needs of the Nigerian educational system;
  • To produce teachers, with a broad background of educational ideas who are up-to-date in knowledge, a subsidiary area and who are able to operate effectively and efficiently within the secondary school level;
  • To develop student’s understanding of the nature, processes and functions of education both as an academic discipline and as an institution in the society and foster student’s commitment to the educational research in the teaching profession;
  • To provide a variety of learning experiences, together with opportunities of putting into practice the educational theories which are taught;
  • To encourage interest in research by providing them with the knowledge skills and experiences which prepare them for higher studies or engagements;
  • To carry out and disseminate research, both theoretical and applied in order to develop theories and understanding of resources and educational practices and to find solutions to educational problems;
  • To encourage the design and production of educational materials for the Nigerian educational system;
  • To inculcate and develop positive attitude towards indigenous cultures, making educations relevant to the needs of the immediate community, the country and the ever-changing world;
  • To contribute to the raising of educational standards in Nigeria by means of the implementation of high quality teacher-training and the provision of in-service teachers;

Accreditation Status
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to virtually all the thirteen programmes.
