About Department of History

Historical Background
The Department of History has its roots in the North-East College of Arts and Science (NECAS), which University of Maiduguri inherited when it was established in 1975. The University provided the Department the opportunity to start a B. A. (Hons.) Degree in History. The Department was initially called African Civilization and World History, which was later changed to History Department. To date, the Department has produced thousand of graduates who have gone a long way in providing the country with much needed manpower in various fields of endeavors in the civil service, military, Para-military and particularly in education. In recent years, the Department has increased its Academic Graduate Programs with a Master of Arts and Ph. D in History with varied fields of specialization. Also, the Department offers Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Arts in Strategic Studies (Professional Courses). Our main focus in areas of research is on the Lake-Chad Basin and Benue Valley. Other issues and areas of research are also taken into cognizance. To promote research, the Department came-up with a journal known as Maiduguri Journal of Historical Studies (MJHS), published since2003. This journal has attracted the attention of different scholars from within and outside the country who contributed to knowledge in different thematic and regional issues.

Philosophy
The Department’s courses expose and equip students to a higher academic and intellectual level of abstraction and discourse on matters of historical studies, from antiquity to contemporary national, regional and international issues. Therefore, making the student to appreciate the value of history as a field of inquiry and an objective discipline is a principal aim of the Department. This allows for enhanced understanding through research and empirical acquisition of knowledge that enables students to cope with the intricacies and complexities of the contemporary society as a byproduct of the historical continuum being studied.

Objective of the Department These are as follows:

  • To give students broad and general instructions in understanding the historical forces and developments that has shaped and are still shaping the histories of the Lake-Chad Basin, Benue Valley, Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
  • To train students in the rudiments of historiography in a multidisciplinary approach aimed at collecting, analyzing and interpreting historical sources in a logical and rational manner.
  • To equip students with the necessary skills to become agents of national and international developments and to be able to cope with the challenges that might arise in their walks of life.

The Department has been well staffed (academic and non-academic) with all the cadres represented.
