Historical Background
The Department of Languages and Linguistics grew out of the former Department of Languages and Literature of the North-East College of Arts and Science (NECAS) as a result of the take-off of the University in 1975-1976. The Department combines the study of linguistics (theoretical, descriptive and applied) with that of specific languages, namely, Fulfulde, Hausa and Kanuri (among Nigerian languages), and English and French (among European languages).

Objectives
The objective of the Department is to provide linguistic training in the construction of grammars of languages (pedagogical and non-pedagogical), the translation and interpretation of languages, compilation of dictionaries and the analysis of texts with focus on the languages of the North-East Zone of Nigeria, which forms the catchment area of the University of Maiduguri

Accreditation Status
All the programmes in the various units of the Department have full accreditation status.

The Department of Languages and Linguistics is divided into five sections:

  • Linguistics
  • French
  • Hausa
  • Kanuri
  • Fulfulde

An appointed coordinator under the Head of Department heads each section.

  1. Four or three-year programme, depending on the entry qualifications of the candidates for B.A.(Hons) degree in French, Hausa, Kanuri and Fulfulde.
  2. Four or three-year programme, depending on the entry qualifications of the candidates for the B.A. (Hons) combined degree as follows:
    • Linguistics/French
    • Linguistics/Hausa
    • Linguistics/Kanuri
    • Linguistics/Fulfulde
    • Linguistics/Arabic
    • Linguistics/English


The Department also offers postgraduate degrees in the following areas:

  • M.A. Applied Linguistics
  • M.A. General Linguistics
  • M.A. Hausa
  • M.A. Kanuri Studies
  • Ph.D. General Linguistics
  • Ph.D. Kanuri Literature
  • Ph.D. Kanuri Linguistics

The Department is well staffed (academic and non-academic) with all the cadres being represented.

This has been increasing steadily over the years apart from the decline recorded recently due to the prevailing circumstances.
