The philosophy of education for Library and Information Science at the University of Maiduguri drives from the national objectives. This calls for an egalitarian, self-reliant and democratic society in which all citizens are free to and can develop their potentialities to their highest possible level for the benefit of the entire society.
To be a producer of competent, dedicated, research-oriented manpower in Library and Information Science for national development.
To produce high quality graduates in Library and Information Science through teaching, learning, research and community service.
The programmes in the Department include: Library and Information Science/BLIS, MLS and Ph.D.
The Department of Library and Information Science commenced offering the professional degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Library Science (BLS) in 1978. In 2009, the Department was re-named Library and Information Science and the degree changed to Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS).
Having enhanced its trained manpower capability with the Master of Library and Information Science for more than ten years, the Department was faced with pressing demand for doctoral programme (Ph.D. by Research). The Department is working assiduously to come up with curriculum for Ph.D. (by course work) vis-à-vis the Benchmark for Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The Department is sufficiently equipped with modern technologies such as computers, micrographics and audio-visual media and a sufficient number of staff with doctorate degrees to run the programmes.
