Prof. Daniel M. Gwary graduated with a B.Sc. Agriculture from the University of Maiduguri and was one of the outstanding students of Crop Science in his class which earned him the offer of Graduate Assistantship in the same Department in 1983. He obtained his Masters and PhD in Crop Protection and Plant Pathology respectively from the University of Wales, Bangor, United Kingdom. Professor Gwary has been lecturing both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the University of Maiduguri. and other Universities as a visiting lecturer since he returned from his postgraduate studies in 1989. He has attracted several research grants and Fellowships to his advantage that assisted him in carrying out meaningful research in his carrier. He was a beneficiary of the prestigious, Royal Society of London Research Fellowship (1996-1997) and the Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship of USA (2005-2006). Over the years he has published more than 75 research articles in both National and International Journals in addition to Conference Proceedings. He has also submitted many technical reports of various studies undertaken nationally and internationally in Dryland Agriculture, food security and Rural Development. As a result of his hard work and consistency, he rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Plant Pathology at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Maiduguri. Prof, Gwary conducted research and made great impacts in the area of climate change not only in crop production but also in general food and energy production. His contribution to climate change in Agriculture and Food Security at both national and international levels are clearly seen in the literature. He has been one of Nigeria’s delegates to UNFCCC Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Conventions and this has earned him the outstanding award of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in 2007 along with his colleagues in the IPCC. In collaboration with the US embassy, Prof. Gwary has organized Youth leadership training workshops and mentored youth leaders under the Fulbright programme. Presently, he Consults regularly for government (International, National, and State), Donor Agencies, International NGOs and other stakeholders on issues of Agriculture, Environment and plays good Advisory, and Advocacy roles in Sustainable Development. Prof. Daniel Gwary is the Director, Centre for Arid Zone Studies of the University of Maiduguri, this is a Tetfund Centre for Excellence for Arid Zone Research and Development in Nigeria.
