In line with its corporate mission as contained in the instrument establishing it, Section 2 (1) (a) of the University of Maiduguri Act CAP. U10 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri identified among other issues, the need for locally trained scientific manpower in pharmacy in order to support healthcare in the catchments area in particular and the country in general. Consequent upon this, the B. Pharm Degree programme and the Faculty of Pharmacy were included in the University master plan in 1995. Subsequently, the Senate of the University at its 182nd sitting on the 28th of November 2002 approved the Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree progamme. The present curriculum, which is framed on the NUC Benchmark for the running of B. Pharmacy programmes in Nigerian Universities, was approved by the Senate of the University of Maiduguri on the 30th of December 2004.

The programme commenced along with other programmes of the College of Medical Sciences during the 2002/2003 session when a draft curriculum was proposed to the University Senate for this purpose. Following Senate approval that the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme be established that year, students were admitted to commence the programme while the draft curriculum was undergoing review. The programme started with the engagement of four pioneer lecturers (Pharm. Sani El-Yakubu, Dr Wazis Haruna Chama, Dr Sadiq Uthman, Pharm (Hon) Abba Masta) who joined hands with other lecturers at the College of Medical Sciences (CMS) Preclinical Departments of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry to teach the students the basic sciences. Teaching of the core courses of Pharmacy followed shortly after the final approval of the curriculum. The Faculty moved to the all purpose building in 2012. Presently there are 351 students made up of 500L, 400L, 300L, 200L students and so far the Faculty has graduated over 300 students. There are 50 lecturers engaged in teaching the students, 19 laboratory staff, 13 administrative and 10 supportive staff (drivers, gardeners, cleaners).
