Overview

It is my honour and privilege to welcome you to the official webpage of the Department of Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Medicine. Established in 1983, the Department is one of the pioneer departments within the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and has remained committed to excellence in teaching, research, and professional service.

Our core mandate is the training of undergraduate medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) students. Over the years, our academic responsibilities have expanded to include the teaching of students in Human Anatomy, Pharmacy, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Nursing Science, and Medical Laboratory Science. We are dedicated to providing high-quality, competency-based education that equips our students with strong foundational knowledge in pathology and forensic medicine.

The Department is actively involved in postgraduate residency training and academic research, contributing to programmes leading to the award of Fellowship and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. Our faculty members are committed to mentoring residents and postgraduate students while promoting innovation, ethical practice, and scholarly excellence.

In furtherance of our commitment to advanced training and capacity building, the Department has recently proposed two new postgraduate programmes — MSc in Clinical Laboratory Management and MSc in Anatomic Pathology — both of which have been approved by the University Senate and are scheduled to commence in the 2025/2026 academic session. These programmes are designed to strengthen specialist manpower development, research capacity, and leadership in laboratory medicine and diagnostic sciences.

In collaboration with the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Department supports clinical training and provides essential diagnostic services in histopathology, cytopathology, and forensic pathology, including postmortem examinations.
