Welcome!

It is with great honour that I welcome you to the College of Medical Sciences, University of Maiduguri- an academic community dedicated to excellence in education, research, and service to humanity. Our College has, over the years, distinguished itself as a centre where rigorous scholarship meets a deep commitment to improving health outcomes within our nation and beyond.

Established more than four decades ago under the University of Maiduguri Act No. 83 of 1979, the College of Medical Sciences has evolved into one of the nation’s most respected centres of Medical Education and Training. From the inaugural class of 21 Medical Doctors who graduated in 1983, the College has, as of January 2026, expanded its impact significantly, producing 3,422 Medical Doctors, 312 Dental Surgeons, 606 Human Anatomists, 896 Medical Laboratory Scientists, 1,125 Radiographers, 873 Nurses, and 545 Physiotherapists. These numbers signify more than accomplishment; they reflect a heritage of excellence.

Our College is home to students who arrive with curiosity and leave with competence, confidence, and a deep sense of responsibility. They learn from teachers who are not only experts in their fields but mentors who take genuine interest in each student’s growth. They train in environments where real-world challenges sharpen their skills and strengthen their resolve.

As you explore our programmes, research efforts, and partnerships, I hope you feel the warmth and purpose that define our Institution. Whether you are a prospective student, a collaborator, a parent, or simply a visitor, you are welcome here. You are stepping into a place where futures are shaped, where ideas grow into innovations, and where people are made. Thank you for taking the time to learn about us. I look forward to the possibility of walking this journey with you.

Faculty overview

The College was formally established by the University of Maiduguri Act 83 of 1979. The late Professor George Miller Edington was its founding Provost and laid the foundation for the Preclinical programme. He was succeeded by Professor Harold Scarborough, the second Provost, who initiated the development of the Clinical programme. Initially, Clinical training was conducted at the General Hospital, Maiduguri, before being relocated to the newly established Teaching Hospital at the beginning of 1982. Among the pioneer members of its academic staff were Professor D. B. Grillo (Department of Anatomy), Professor J. K. Segupta (Department of Physiology), Dr. P. K. Joseph (Department of Biochemistry) and Professor Harold Scarborough (Department of Medicine). The mature academic leadership of Professor Scarborough put the College on a sound footing and the first set of 21 Doctors - maiden graduates of the College, completed their studies in June 1983. Professor Scarborough retired from the services of the University in 1984 and was succeeded by the first Nigerian, Professor S. B. Lagundoye, a Professor of Radiology from University of Ibadan on secondment as the third substantive Provost of the College. He remained at the helm of affairs until October 1987 before going back to the University of Ibadan. He was succeeded by numerous acting Provosts at different times namely: Professor K. Ahmad, Head, Department of Pharmacology for about six months (1987-1988), Professor H.C. Varma, Head, Department of Human Anatomy (1988-1989), Professor N. Sawhney, Head, Department of Microbiology (1989-1991; 1994-1995). The Faculty of Dentistry was created in 2001, with Professor Hector Olasoji who served as the pioneer Dean.
