The University of Maiduguri

The University of Maiduguri is a federal university in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. It was established in 1975 and takes its name from the Kanem-Bornu Empire, whose heartland this region was for many centuries.

About the University

The University of Maiduguri was established in 1975 and grew out of the institutions that served the old Borno Province: schools, a teachers' college and the district education offices that once ran teacher training and public service examinations in what is now Borno State. From the beginning it has combined three jobs — teaching, research and service to the community around it — and that combination still shapes what the University does.

It is named for the Kanem-Bornu Empire, whose seat of government was for many centuries at Ngazargamu, a few kilometres from where the University now stands in Maiduguri. The name is a reminder that this part of the country was once a centre of learning long before the campus existed.

What the University does

Teaching runs through the faculties listed below, each of them responsible for its own departments and programmes. Research is carried out through the departments and the University's research journals, among them the Educational Forum, the Research Journal of Science and the University of Maiduguri Journal of Islamic and Comparative Laws. Community service covers the teaching hospital, the library, the radio station and the outreach work of individual departments.

Current announcements, events and publications are posted on the news and events page, and the University speaks to the public through Kanem Radio and the University Bulletin.

How the University is governed

The University is governed by the Governing Council, which is chaired by the Pro-Chancellor. Day-to-day academic and administrative work is led by the Vice-Chancellor, assisted by the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, the Registrar and the Bursar. The principal officers and their roles are listed under Principal Officers.
