The Chancellor
The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University, appointed by the President of Nigeria and the traditional ruler of the Emirate.

His Royal Highness Hon Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, CFR, JSC (RTD.), Emir of Lafia Bare-Bari, Nasarawa State, was appointed Chancellor, University of Maiduguri on 6 April 2023.
Career in the judiciary
A 1980 graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and of the Nigerian Law School Lagos in 1981, he was appointed a Magistrate on 10 August 1982 and rose through the ranks to become a Chief Magistrate in 1988, Deputy Chief Registrar in 1990 and Substantive Chief Registrar of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in 1991. He was elevated as Justice of the Court of Appeal in December 2007 and was sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on 5 December 2016.
He was appointed Chairman of the Miscellaneous Offence Tribunal Lagos in 1995, Chairman of the Election Tribunal for Taraba State in 1999, Kano State in March 2003, Abia State in August 2005, Gombe State in 2006 and Oyo State in 2007.
Traditional and other roles
Hon Justice Bage was selected as the 17th Emir of Lafia Bare-Bari on 26 March 2019 and was presented with a 1st Class Staff of Office on 3 May 2019. He was also appointed Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Emirs. He was at one time Chancellor of the Federal University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, and Chancellor of River State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt. He is a member of the National Judicial Council (NJC). His hobbies are reading in general, horse riding, playing golf and squash racket.
