Department of Chemical Pathology

On behalf of the Department of Chemical Pathology, I warmly welcome you to the Department. Chemical Pathology, also known as Clinical Biochemistry, is a core discipline that bridges basic medical sciences and clinical practice. It focuses on the biochemical basis of disease, the use of laboratory investigations in diagnosis, monitoring, and prognosis, and the rational interpretation of test results in patient care. The department receives students during their clinical posting. During the posting, the students are expected to:

• Attend all lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and ward-based or clinic-oriented discussions punctually.
• Demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and respect for staff, colleagues, patients, and laboratory property.
• Actively participate in teaching activities, including case discussions and problem-based learning sessions.
• Read widely beyond lecture notes, using recommended textbooks and current guidelines.
• Adhere strictly to laboratory safety rules and ethical standards.
• Prepare adequately for continuous assessments, practicals, and end-of-posting examinations.

Regular attendance and active engagement are not only mandatory but essential for students to derive maximum benefit from this posting.

The learning objectives of the Posting include:

1. Understand basic principles of biochemical tests commonly used in clinical practice.
2. Explain the pathophysiology and biochemical basis of common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, renal disorders, liver diseases, lipid disorders, electrolyte and acid–base disturbances, and endocrine disorders.
3. Select appropriate laboratory investigations for common clinical scenarios.
4. Interpret laboratory results accurately, taking into account clinical context, reference ranges, and pre-analytical and analytical factors.
5. Recognize the role of quality assurance and laboratory medicine in patient safety.
6. Appreciate the interaction between clinicians and the laboratory, including proper sample collection, handling, and result utilization.
